The Dorset Archives Trust (DAT) is proud to announce that the Barnes For All! fundraising campaign has successfully reached its initial target of £35,000, enabling the cataloguing of the extensive archive of Dorset’s most celebrated dialect poet, William Barnes.

Held in 66 boxes at the Dorset History Centre, the archive contains a rich variety of materials—including poems, sermons, letters, lecture posters, engravings, and personal papers—offering a rare insight into the literary and everyday world of Victorian Dorset.

The funds raised will allow a professional archivist to catalogue the collection to international standards and make it accessible to the public for research, education, and enjoyment. The cataloguing project is set to begin in October 2025.

Chris Fowler, Chair of Dorset Archives Trust, said: “It is fantastic news that we have reached our target with the combined efforts of all the generous individuals, donors, and partners who contributed. We could not have done this without you.”

Appeal Remains Open to Fund Digitisation and Conservation

Although the primary goal has been met, DAT has announced that the appeal will remain open until the project starts in October. Any additional funds raised will go directly towards the conservation of fragile materials and the digitisation of key documents—ensuring global access to this historically significant archive.

“We want this collection to be as widely accessible as possible,” Chris Fowler added. “Additional donations will help preserve delicate materials and allow digital access for scholars and readers across the world.”
